Stepping into the University can be like entering the Amazon Jungle; you’ll discover and learn new things everyday while dodging ‘Mean Girls’ away. There are students who thrive in the pressure while there are those who excel beyond expectations.
Athlete Michele Gumabao and student leader Alex Castro are two of the latter. Both of these ace students have proven that a day is more than enough to juggle tasks and do well in multiple endeavors.
God-fearing lady spiker
Michele Gumabao is a name that is marked Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) volleyball hall of fame. With her trademark spikes, calculated set plays, offensive blocks and a competitiveness in the court, she has become one of the most successful players in the UAAP league, leading the De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers to a three-peat victory. Aside from her sports achievements, Gumabao is also a Dean’s Lister and now a host of GMA News TV’s All Sports.
“Volleyball was just a hobby for me. When I realized I had a passion for it, I couldn’t stop,” said Gumabao. “I give 100% in every game and I dedicate every game to God. It’s also the reason I was so inspired to play.”
Passionate student leader
Student leader Alexandra “Alex” Castro has made multi-tasking and excelling in each task her lifestyle. She is the current University Student Council (USC) chairperson at UP Diliman, she is also a law student, a model, a member of the basketball, judo and ultimate frisbee teams, a power lifting medalist, a cum laude graduate, and a member of more than 10 organizations.
“With initiative, that’s how I get myself into a lot of things. I like starting projects or campaigns that no one has ever thought of before. That’s innovation, and it’s important if you really want to achieve things,” Alex said.
She added, “I define discipline as the way you have to do it, instead of the way you want to do it. That’s how I manage my time. And lastly, and most importantly, it all boils down to passion. Because I know I love what I’m doing and I really want to do it. So it’s easier for me to wake up in the morning and do all these. That’s where I get my drive.”
Both students excel in different fields, but Michele and Alex recognize the key role that communication plays in helping achieve success
“It is so much easier having a reliable network because I am able to accomplish tasks faster,” Michele shared. “I am more efficient and I am always a call or text away because I am always connected.”
