Meet the Sony Handycam HDR-GWP88: waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, freeze-proof, and Full HD

Sony targets those with an active lifestyle with its newest offering in the Handycam line, the HDR-GWP88—a waterproof, shockproof, dustproof, and freeze-proof Full HD handheld video camera equipped with a built-in LED projector.

The HDR-GWP88 was created with adventurers and extreme sports enthusiasts in mind, which is why it is designed to be extra-durable and to be functional even under extreme conditions. It is waterproof up to ten (10) meters, shockproof up to five (5) meters, freeze-proof down to -10oC, and dustproof.

Black-FrontOn the front face of the HDR-GWP88 is an integrated flash, plus a “self-record” button, which is meant to make it easier for users to take a photo or video of themselves.

Packed with an EXMOR R CMOS sensor, the HDR-GWP88 is capable of shooting videos in Full HD (1920 x 1080 pixels) resolution at 60fps. It can also shoot stills at 20.4 megapixels with an aspect ratio of 16:9, or at 15.3 megapixels using a 4:3 aspect ratio.

Although Sony includes a free wide-angle conversion adapter in the retail package, the fixed lens on the HDR-GWP88 is a Sony G Lens with a focal range of 29.8mm-298.0mm (16:9, 35mm equivalent) and an aperture range of F/1.8 to F/3.4. The G Lens features 10x optical zoom, but the camera can go as far as 120x (digital zoom). Zooming is done by thumbing the dial on the control area of the camera.

The swivel monitor is home to a 3-inch LCD display with 460,000 dots. The built-in LED projector found on the other side of the monitor is capable of a throw distance of approximately 1.6 feet, at the very least. The projector function is launched using a dedicated button on the control area. A slider on the top edge of the monitor allows users to adjust the focus of the projector.

Built into the HDR-GWP88 is 16GB worth of internal memory, plus an SD card slot for storage expansion. Connectivity options include USB and HDMI D ports.

Additionally, the HDR-GWP88 is equipped with Sony’s SteadyShot technology for image stabilization, and features an Active mode to reduce camera shake in telephoto shooting.
