The Lumia 1020: Things you need to know about Nokia’s new smartphone

It has a 41MP PureView camera.

Like the Nokia 808 PureView that was released last year, the Nokia Lumia 1020 features a 41-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) sensor and utilizes PureView, Nokia’s pixel oversampling technology.

This means that you’ll be able to take stills in 34 and 38 megapixels, depending on the aspect ratio of your choice—16:9 for the former, and 4:3 for the latter.

The camera makes use of six Zeiss lenses and features integrated optical image stabilization.

Apart from the powerful main camera found on the back of the device, the Lumia 1020 also comes with a 1.2MP front-facing camera with a wide-angle lens.

It is equipped with a xenon flash for lighting dark scenes for stills and LED light for illuminating video.

It is the first Windows Phone 8 handset that uses this camera system.

The first Nokia phone to use PureView technology was the 808 PureView, which ran Symbian. The Lumia 1020 is the first Windows Phone 8 device by Nokia to incorporate these features.

Lossless zoom is enabled at full-resolution shooting.

Lossless zoom essentially means that there will be no (or minimal) loss of quality when you zoom into a scene while taking pictures. The Lumia 1020’s camera is capable of delivering up to 3x lossless digital zoom.

It can shoot a low-resolution image and a high-resolution image simultaneously.

When you hit the shutter button to take 34- or 38-megapixel photos, you will also be capturing a 5-megapixel photo. By generating a low-resolution copy of the photo, the Lumia 1020 creates an easy-to-upload version of your original photo to enable sharing images to your friends via social networking sites to take a whole lot faster than it would if you try to upload the full-resolution files.

The phone is equipped with a Pro Camera app.

The Pro Camera app installed on the Lumia 1020 enables users to manually control exposure settings and other parameters like ISO and white balance.

The Pro Camera app is not going to be the only program to support PureView. During the announcement of the Lumia 1020, Nokia also released a software development kit (SDK) for developers, which enables them to take advantage of the PureView technology within their own apps. It can be downloaded HERE.

It is capable of shooting Full HD 1080p videos.

When taking videos, the Lumia 1020 also makes use of the powerful sensor and PureView technology, which, according to Nokia, processes 1 billion pixels per second when shooting video. Shooting at 720p offers up to 6x lossless digital zooming, while shooting at 1080p gives you a lesser zoom range. The video function also features stereo audio recording through Nokia’s Rich Recording technology.

The screen is a 4.5 inch AMOLED HD+ display.

The 4.5-inch display has a resolution of 1280 x 768 with a pixel density of 334 pixels per inch (ppi). The screen is topped with Gorilla Glass and can sense touch even with the use of gloves.

Inside it is a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, 2GB RAM, and 32GB ROM.

Of course, a powerful smartphone camera needs a fairly powerful system to support it. The Lumia 1020 runs on a 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 chip, which is complemented by 2GB RAM.

There’s only one storage variant for the Lumia 1020—32GB—but it is expandable via microSD.

It is LTE-ready.

Connectivity options are LTE, HSPA+, GSM/EDGE. The Lumia 1020 is also equipped with NFC, in addition to Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS capabilities.

Wireless charging isn’t integrated.

Its 2000 mAh battery is non-user accessible, and wireless charging is enabled only with the use of an optional snap-on shell.

Lumia 1020 6

There’s an optional camera grip for it.

The Nokia Camera Grip PD-95G provides a camera grip for the phone, as well as a tripod mount. On top of that, it extends the Lumia 1020’s run time with its integrated 1020 mAh battery.

It uses microSIM.

If you’re still using regular-sized SIM cards, you’ll have to cut your cards or purchase microSIM/dual-cut cards from our local carriers.

Physical dimensions and color variants

The Lumia 1020 is 130.4mm tall, 71.4mm wide, 10.4mm thick, and it tips the scales at 158g. The device is available in three color variants: yellow, black and white.

It will cost USD 299.99.

It goes on sale on July 26th for USD 299.99 in the US. Via direct conversion, that’s roughly PHP 13,020. No word yet on when it will hit our shores and what the official SRP will be.
